It’s Victorian-era San Francisco. Chinatown is ready to explode in gang warfare after the body of one of its leaders was stolen from a funeral home. Then, while carrying home a drug-addicted attorney, private detective John Quincannon is ambushed outside the opium den. The lawyer is killed, and although he worked for one of the tons, chances are good that white San Franciscans intend to do something in revenge.
While Quincannon investigates the murder, his partner Sabina Carpenter looks into the kidnapping of a corpse from the recently deceased’s wealthy family. She’s also bedeviled by three men: a wealthy scion with a secret who’s courting her, Quincannon’s obvious feelings for her, and a shadowy fellow who insists he’s Sherlock Holmes and intent on helping her.
That’s ten pounds of story crammed into a two-pound book, yet it feels as if little of it matters. The potential tong war drifts but doesn’t move towards a climax. The players act as expected. The resolution of a mystery can echo like a tragedy fulfilled, or be appreciated for the elegance of its clockwork mechanism. Neither happens here.
